Why Do You Keep Doing This To Us?

Sure, free stuff is cool. We all love to get free stuff. Especially when that free stuff is useful. But am I really the only one out there that thinks an upper management mandated employee appreciation day/week is utterly rediculous and counter productive?

I’ve been through five… six of these so far and not once have I felt even slightly more appreciated than I have on an average day. Everyone knows that it’s by command of upper management. Most people realize that it was prompted by some study, somewhere, that says that employees will feel more appreciated when celebrated.

Sure. I feel appreciated by upper management. I truly believe that they appreciate the hard work that us peons put in on a daily basis. Do I feel that our immediate management appreciates us? Of course not.

Would you feel appreciated by a mandated employee appreciation day?


I’m Baaaaaack

Just giving anyone reading a quick update. After a two year hiatus, I have returned to the world of minimum wage jobs. I can’t promise regular blog entries. I can’t even promise blogging during my breaks like was my original plan. I can promise to update when I can.

Keeping Track

Screams of confusion come from all sides.

Has it really been that long since I last posted? Oops. Well, it’s a new year of life and therefore a new year of venting.

Before I get into the topic I chose to break the New Year’s Ice I wanted to make a few comments and requests along with an apology. I’m not it’s been ages, but I’d like to try to post here occasionaly. First of all, I am no longer working for my ‘beloved’ McDonalds, although (plug to the topic) I do still have my notebooks of things I had wanted to blog about. So if I refer to previous times at McDonalds, you’ll understand. In the meantime, my stupid people moments I’m sure will keep accumalating, even if I’m not still with McDonalds.

Where there are people, there will be stupid people doing stupid and annoring things.

Secondly, I’m looking for anyone interested in sending in guest posts. We all have something to say, say it here. I’m adding a form page where you can give me your email address and a sample of your work. I’ll either add you on as a contributer or email you suggestions on improvements.

On to the topic of keeping notebooks.

They’re more than just writers devices. It’s very important to keeping tracks of many things, especially transgressions. Whether you need to keep track for the purpose of blogging or venting or because you need to take it to your management, it’s important to keep all the details fresh in your mind.

Just make sure you don’t lose that notebook. I left one behind that I jotted down notes of transgressions made by my coworkers and I about had a heart attack when I realized it was still at work. You never saw a happier person when I got it back.

Quick Tip: Keep a Notebook By the Bed.


Night Time Nothingness

I really have to wonder just how much people really think about the world around them, especially the part of the world that doesn’t immediately and obviously involve them.

This all began when I came in to work early for once. I know it’s a real shocker, but try to stick with me for a moment. I found a large stack of trays in need of cleaning and liners, in addition to left over dishes. I mean really, does it take that much of a rocket scientist to realize that if you leave me a lot of extra work to do that I won’t have an equal amount of time to get my own stuff done which leaves that much more work for the next person. It’s a vicious cycle that keeps going until we finally have such a slow day that there is enough time to get both night shift’s work and my own done. Don’t get me wrong, it does happen, but it shouldn’t have to.

I’m not one to complain constantly and throw in the childish “it’s not fair,” to go with it. So once I write this I won’t say another word about it, at least until next time. 😉

In a way I suppose it’s just a matter of people growing up. Places like McDonald’s, Hardees, Burger King, and many others are usually on the front lines when it comes to bringing kids into the work place. Most kids don’t have proper work ethics and it seems to be the place of the large chain fast food restaurants to beat it into them. Sometimes I wish literally. So I guess I should have more patience with the kids when they put more work on me and the others on my shift. The problem is that I have worked night shift in the past. I know that it’s not that busy and that they have plenty of time to get things done. I do know that the grill usually leaves their dishes to the last minute, understandably. But there’s no excuse for not getting just about everything done in the early evening. I have done it before; I know these young kids can too.

Support from the management would help, but they don’t really care beyond their own shift. I have seen it countless times. When people call out for the next shift, there’s rarely any effort made to find replacements or even to let the next manager know. If the managers at night aren’t held accountable for the work done, or not done, on their shift then where is the incentive for hourly managers to do their jobs properly? Most lower level managers don’t receive any incentives beyond making sure that they keep the speed, and once in awhile accuracy, up to par.

Despite all of this, at least there were plenty of happy meal boxes fixed in advance. That’s always nice to see. It could be worse, I suppose. I could be working for Hardees.


New Contributer

I know, I know. I’ve been slacking on my job of writing. I promise to do better in the future, but I’ve had a lot of home life issues lately.

Now that the excuses are done with… The good news! Yes, I have good news.

I’ve conned… er… convinced another McDonald’s employee to join my cause. She prefers to write about stupid customers.

Breast Money

Does anyone else find it disturbing when some lady pulls money from her bra (or at least I hope from her bra) to pay for something? In my opinion it is entirely too close to actually touching her.

I’ll be perfectly honest with you. I’m a slight germaphobe, or mysophobic if you prefer. I say slight because I can touch dirt and other such items, but I don’t like it and I usually find an opportunity to wash my hands real soon afterwards. If someone’s hands are wet when they hand me money and they’re not dressed for the beach, I’m reaching for my hand sanitizer as soon as they leave my window. In fact, I usually carry a bottle of cheap hand sanitizer in order to not have to leave my window to use the store stuff so often. McDonald’s hand sanitizer is very harsh on the skin if used too often. I tend to get rashes on my hands from it. That’s why I bring my own that has a moisturizer in it.

Back on topic, I can’t get away from this one train of thought. That money is touching her skin intimately, most likely her breasts even. I don’t know her or how clean she keeps herself. Even if she’s a neat freak, that money still picks up the slightest amount of sweat, and it does get plenty hot where I work. That money that touched her chest like that now touches my skin. It’s a middle man to my touching her breast myself. Eww! The thought alone gives me the shivers.

Is it that hard to carry a pocketbook? Or at least a bag you can through in the car. At the very least take your money out where I can’t see you. At least this way I can try to pretend that the bills are moist from the beach or pool or lake or river. And, yes, the money was damp. Ugh.


Disgusting Coworkers

I guess to start with I should apologize for not having posted in awhile. (as if anyone is actually following my blog at this point) I’ve had a bit much on my plate, but I’m working on that.

What brought me back so suddenly was something that happened on… Friday that i just couldn’t keep silent about. First of all I have to admit that I didn’t actually see this happen. What I heard was a big commotion between a crew person in the grill and a manager… Let’s call the person… Jean. That’s a fairly safe name. Jean was upset about how she could not serve the customer the chicken they had used. I heard the whole issue and I felt sorry for whoever had done it. This Jean is not the nicest of people on a good day. It’s amazing that Jean is a manager.

A little background here: Our Southern Style chicken is pretty good. The problem on Friday came about because they had not changed the oil in that particular fryer yet. (we have six all together) Anyway, the old grease gave the chicken a darker color to it.

Now for the part that bothered me about it. This is the part that I got second hand, but fits with other things that I’ve seen and heard with Jean. Anyway, a person who was watching saw Jean pick a piece of chicken from out waste bin and give the chicken sandwich out to the customer like that.

For those of you unfamiliar with McDonalds, the waste bin is where food that is messed up or returned from a customer is thrown so that it can be counted later on for inventory purposes.

So in essence she took a sandwich that wasn’t good enough for a customer and replaced it with chicken… that wasn’t good enough for a customer. Go figure.

Yesterday, I left the store manager with a note about what happened and the date and time of the incident. We’ll see how that goes.

edit: at a later date it was explained that it wasn’t a customer that got the bad chicken, but a coworker that took it from the waste bin. Was it really? We’ll never know for sure. If it was… Then I apologize to the aforementioned “Jean.”
